Choosing a silver mangalsutra for daily wear

Most married women we speak to own two: a heavy gold mangalsutra kept for occasions and in the locker, and a lighter one for work, travel and ordinary days. The second one takes all the wear — it goes through commutes, cooking, sanitiser and sleep — and that is exactly the piece it makes sense to buy in silver.

The logic is practical rather than sentimental. A 925 sterling silver mangalsutra costs a fraction of the gold equivalent, so losing a clasp on a train is an inconvenience rather than a disaster. It can be replaced or redesigned as tastes change. And because the black beads carry the meaning, the metal holding them is a matter of what suits your life.

• Short mangalsutra. An 18 to 20 inch chain that sits at the collarbone, usually with a small pendant. The most common choice for daily wear: it stays under a kurta or a shirt collar, does not swing while you work, and does not catch on a dupatta.
• Long mangalsutra. The traditional 24 to 30 inch length, worn with the pendant at or below the chest. Heavier, more visible, better suited to sarees and to occasions than to a desk.
• Mangalsutra bracelet. Black beads on a bracelet rather than a chain. Popular with women in professions where a chain is impractical — hospitals, laboratories, kitchens — and with anyone who dislikes anything at the neck.
• Chain-only or minimal. A fine black-bead chain with no pendant at all. Reads as a plain necklace to anyone not looking for it, which is the point for many women who travel or work abroad.

A mangalsutra is worn more hours per year than any other piece of jewellery someone owns. Three things decide whether it survives that.

• The clasp. The single most common point of failure. A spring ring clasp is cheap and fails first; a lobster clasp or a screw clasp is what you want on something worn daily.
• How the beads are strung. Beads threaded onto the chain itself last far longer than beads on a separate silk or nylon thread, which frays and eventually snaps.
• Chain weight and gauge. Very fine chains look elegant and break. For daily wear, a slightly heavier gauge is the difference between five years and one.

A mangalsutra faces more sweat and more friction than any other piece, so it dulls faster. Two habits cover most of it: take it off before a shower, and wipe it with a soft dry cloth before it goes back in the box.
